We’re heading into another busy week here in Healdsburg. The Fourth of July promises to be fun. We start the day with the Boy Scout’s “best pancake breakfast,” then head to the Plaza for Rotary’s annual Picnic and Duck Dash Races; there is a Kiddie Parade, popcorn, sno-cones, pie eating contest, music and games with prizes. At dusk, the American Legion hosts a fantastic “ooh” and “ahh” fireworks display.

If you can’t make it to town for the Fourth, join us mid-week for a Tuesday evening free concert in the Plaza. Stay over at the Inn for our Chocolate-Covered Wednesday specials. Look for chocolate port, desserts and other treats. Call us at 707-433-8182 for reservations.

One way to beat the summer heat is to stay here at the Inn and linger in our pool. Or, head to the spectacular Pacific Coast nearby. The towns of Jenner and Bodega Bay are less than an hour away, via scenic country roads. The coastlines are rugged and beautiful; a stop in Bodega Bay offers views, restaurants and art galleries.

The S.F. Gate/Chronicle ran an article about shopping in Healdsburg, called “Healdsburg's Premium Blend of Shopping.” Did you catch it? It begins “…Healdsburg is a fusion of distinct varietals - rustic and sophisticated, world class and down to earth…,” then it lists some unusual downtown shops.

Imagine. The Paul Mahder Gallery on Healdsburg Avenue is the venue for an exhibition of John Lennon’s artwork, June 27th through June 29th. The exhibit — about 100 limited-edition lithographs, serigraphs and copper etchings — is shown less than a dozen times a year. There is no fee to view this, but donations are requested for the Redwood Empire Food Bank. What an honor!

A Fourth of July favorite:
Best BBQ Sauce
2 Tbsp oil
½ cup vinegar
1 small onion, minced
¼ cup brown sugar
1 clove garlic, minced
1 6-oz. can tomato sauce
1 teas dry mustard
a few grains chili powder
1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
¼ cup water
Combine oil, onion & garlic. Simmer 5 minutes. Add mustard and remaining ingredients. Simmer 10 minutes. Use over ribs or chicken.
